Sugar Hill Harlem Inn is located in the landmark district of Sugar Hill, in a Victorian townhouse built in 1906. In 2001 we did a complete renovation of all the electric, the plumbing the bathrooms and the kitchens, taking great care to preserve the historical details of the building. The function/reception room image is the large image located on the top of this page. We named this room Dukes Place, for Duke Ellington. Born in Washington DC in 1899. As a young man he came to Harlem and played at the Cotton Club. He was a composer and an innovator using the piano in different ways to fuse African and Latin music. This room is used for small functions such as weddings, showers, parties, bar mitzvah's, poetry and play readings. There is a fireplace. There are 2 sofas and a large round table that can be used or you can bring your own furniture. There is a large kitchen and also a garden in the back which can be used when the weather permits. We have 2 rooms with private bathroom on the 1st floor. Satchmo's Room is named for Louis Armstrong. He was born in New Orleans, but he lived the last years of his life in Corona, a working class neighborhood in Queens. He frequently performed in some of the great clubs in Harlem. He was the most respected jazz musician of his era and most probably the greatest horn player in the history of jazz. And so it is fitting that this is the largest room in the house. This room has a fireplace, original wood floors and oriental rugs, a king size bed, a large bathroom, with separate shower and bathtub. It also comes with an outside deck. Lena's Room is named for Lena Horne who was born in Brooklyn and at the age of 16 performed at the cotton club. There she was introduced to the growing community of jazz performers including Billy Holiday, Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington. Lena's room is the most elaborately designed room in the house. The fireplace and wall are ordained with elaborate molding's. It is the most feminine and romantic room in the house. The four poster bed with all its gauzy fabrics is very much the center of the room. It comes with a small bathroom, with sink, toilet and shower only. So we jazzed it up with some offbeat tile colors of ruby red and royal blue. We have two studios with private bathrooms and kitchens on the 2nd floor. Miles Room is named for Miles Davis who was an early Sonny Rollins fan and hung out with him and his Sugar Hill Harlem crowd that included, Jackie Mclean, Kenny Drew, and Art Taylor. Miles Davis was one of the most influential and innovative musicians of the 20th century. Miles room has a fireplace, original wood floors, oriental rugs, a queen size bed, and a full size kitchen, with stove, fridge and microwave. The bathroom has a shower and bathtub. Josephine's Room is named for Josephine Baker. She was born in St Louis and performed with Ethel Waters in Harlem. She lived most of her life in France and was a famed dancer, singer, actor and civil rights leader. She adopted 11 children of different races. She called them her rainbow tribe. Josephine's room has a fireplace, original wood floors, oriental rugs,an antique double bed and a full size kitchen, with stove, fridge and microwave. The bathroom has a shower and bathtub. If like Josephine you have your very own rainbow tribe we can accommodate you by adding an extra bed We have one 2 bedroom suite, The Renaissance Suite, (Living Room from the Renaissance Suite) named for the black renaissance and cultural revolution that took place in Harlem in the 20's and 30's and was a profound musical, literary and political movement. It is on the 3rd floor. So steps must be your thing as there is no elevator. But it is a nice walk as there is a beam of light bursting through the skylight at the top of the stairs, where you enter into a large living room, with original wood floors and oriental carpets, and a fireplace. There is a sofa bed so there is room for extra persons. There is a long hallway with bare brick walls and skylight leading past the kitchen and bathroom to Ella's room on the right and Ali's room straight ahead. If you are a large party of 4 or more this is the place for you. It is light and airy and you will feel right at home soaking up the history of Harlem right at the top of Sugar Hill. All our guests are welcome to come sit in our garden. You will be amazed to hear the beautiful bird songs in the early summer evenings. This garden was built by a novice who had never built a garden or anything like this before. He went into the woods up in the Catskills and spent weeks looking for wild plants, old mossy tree stumps, bits of rotten wood, baby fir trees, firns, ivy, dirt and anything that caught his eye. He also retrieved, old bricks and floor beams from building sites where a building had been torn down. He then brought back all this nature and rearranged it in this garden. Fixtures All our rooms come with TV, DVD, cable, AC, iron, ironing board, hair dryer. Rates Our rooms rates are from $125-$275 per night depending on the room, the time of year and the length of stay. Reservations For reservation information, click here or call 212.234.5432.
