Harlem. The Public Service Commission. Use it.

Most people have heard of the Better Business Bureau .Less have heard of the Public Service Commission. The problem is that most people, especially the disenfranchised, never use these services. A great deal of energy went into putting these agencies in place to protect your rights and it is your right and your role to use it.

If you have never used either of these agencies, you have been, are being,or about to be, screwed Let's start with the Public Service Commission. They cover: Electric, Gas, Telecommunications, Water, Cable and Steam.

Electric and gas in NY state come on the same bill,I think. They certainly do in New York City. You have a problem with Con Ed, for example, and you feel that you are being screwed and you can't understand why they don't give a damn about you,the customer. They are threatening to cut off your lights and gas.You may not know it, but you are in a very powerful position if you file a complaint with the Public Service Commission.

If Con Ed is not turning on your gas and or electricity,if you are unfortunate to be involved in some nightmarish construction project, and you are right at the end of this thing, and the only part holding you back is Con Ed, call the Public Service Commission. It is like someone turned a light on in the middle of your head. Now all of a sudden you are being treated like a customer, a very important customer. The word ,fawning and obsequious comes to mind.

"Yes Mr Smith. No Mr Smith,we will be right there Mr Smith".
And when it is all done they don't leave you alone.
"Was everything done to your satisfaction Mr Smith?".
"Yes,everything is fine now,but please stop calling me,this the 3rd time you called today".

The same goes for Verizon or whatever lame phone company you were unfortunate enough to be stranded with.Water and cable problems are also issues that the Public Service Commission deal with.If you turn on the tap, or your TV and the water,or the reception, is some sickly shade of yellow, and you are not getting service, call them.

If you don't like your bill and you feel that you are being burned, then most likely you are.Every state has a Public Service Commission so if you don't live in New York, you can still file a complaint. The last item on the list is steam, and I'm not sure what that is but perhaps that has something to do with the way you will feel, before, during and after your struggle.

Remember these companies are monopolies and this Public Service Commission is in place to protect your rights. All I ask is, that you tell other people what I am telling you.Not enough people file complaints about these monopolies and so they end up just servicing the people who do, and everyone else gets shafted. They get huge fines levied against them when they get too many complaints. They spend little or no money on maintenance and then blackouts occur like the one in Queens last summer.

The other agency is the Better Business Bureau and these guys are great.I avoid bureaucrats like the plague, but this is different. For a change, they are on your side.I've seen Citi Bank, Chase and GE groveling, giving back the money they tried to steal, and apologizing for any inconvenience.

The Public Service Commission help out with the monoplies and the Better Business Bureau with all the other businesses. This includes auto/lemon laws and id theft.

Always remember,to pass this information on. Don't forget to thank the people that helped you.Sometimes it is hard to imagin a person there working on your behalf especially if you file these complaints online.

Getting from LaGuardia Airport To Sugar Hill Harlem Inn

Driving
Map and directions Driving takes 20-40 minutes and the tolls are around $4 depending on your route. For information on renting a car, click here. For parking information, call (718) 533-3850

Taxis
Taxis into the city take anywhere from 20-40 minutes. They cost between $24-$28 NOT including bridge tolls (these are an additional 3 dollars). Taxis are cash only. Make sure to hail a cab in the designated areas or ask a uniformed airport employee to help you. Generally, it's polite to tip 20% of the total fare.

Car Services
Gotham Limousine
: For a much more money than a taxi, you can have a limo or sedan. Services such as opening doors, just in case your arms are too tired, helping with luggage, curbside assistance, what ever that means, airport baggage claim greeting and advance reservations are part of this service. Visit the website for a special discount coupon. This discount system looks fairly convoluted to me so good luck collecting on that one

Public Transportation
The New York City buses run to LaGuardia for $2.00. If you have large quantities of luggage, you will find it difficult to manage this trip. You will need $2.00 in change, or a Metrocard for any public bus.
The M60 bus picks you up at the airport.Ask for a transfer. After crossing the Triboro Bridge, you will travel along 125th st. to Amsterdam Ave.Look for the Apollo on the right hand side,Amsterdam Ave is another 3 blocks. From here you take, another bus north to 141 st,don't forget to get the transfer from the driver or you'll have to pay again. When you get off the bus, make a right on 141st and we are in the middle of the block.Look for the house with all the wood outside.
You can also take SuperShuttle: 800.258.3826 This works well if you come from LaGuardia airport since the first district you arrive in,when you cross the Triboro Bridge is Harlem. So you would normally be one of the first to be dropped off.Just check with the driver to be sure, and ask if he will be dropping off passengers in Harlem first. If the bus makes a left hand turn and starts going downtown after the Triboro Bridge, that is not a good sign. That means you are going away from Harlem and you may be on that bus for a long time.
You can also take a helicopter from LaGuardia but unlike SuperShuttle it won't drop you off in Harlem,I have a flat roof so you could always ask.The rate for the trip is only $990.00.On Saturday and Sunday the helicopter will drop you off at 34st and the West Side Highway.Just grab a limo and come straight up the highway.
If you take the helicopter Monday - Friday, this is not so convenient since the helicopter drops you off near Wall st all the way downtown. You would then need to take a boat to Pier 84 and then that limo ride up the West Side Highway. It would however be quicker and significantly cheaper to take the bus.

New York ships their garbage to Guyana and Trinidad

GEORGETOWN, Guyana:
"Assuming all goes well, former New York police commissioner, Bernard Kerik will arrive in Guyana next month to take up the post of security advisor to the government."This is according to the Caribbean Net News
Assuming all goes well for who?
Kerik visited the South American nation last year, a trip that, The Inter-American Bank(IDB) said it did not pay for. The bank is financing a US$20 million project to reform the police force. If you check their website one of its motto's is "...promotes projects that enforce it's commitment to fight corruption."
There is a link on their website called,"Why are Latin Americans so unhappy about Reforms?"
That's a pretty funny question.I think the short answer is that they don't work, but their answer is about 29 pages long. Part 2.1 goes "...........This could be part of a global trend with the end of the Reagan Thatcher era and the beginning of a new world wide movement to the left following, with a lag, the leadership of Bill Clinton and Tony Blair."That's a pretty big lag since Clinton has not been around since 2000 and is best remembered for his blowjobs . Tony Blair seems to be the most despised man in Britain right now and hardly he or Clinton would be considered a bastion of the left.
In 1998 Bernard Kerik became commissioner of the NYC dept. of Corrections. Some $1m in tobacco rebates for cigarettes bought with public funds and then sold at inflated prices to inmates were discovered to have been funneled into a foundation that Kerik headed.
In 2000 he replaced Howard Safir as police commissioner. On September 11 2001 the lack of coordination and the ongoing conflict between Kerik and Fire Commissioner Thomas Van Essen had a catastrophic effect, hampering rescue operations, and leading to death and injury of firefighters and police.
In June 2006,Kerik pleaded guilty to improperly accepting nearly $200,000.In return for his guilty plea to 2 misdemeanor counts and his payment of a $221,000 fine,he escaped jail time.Kerik allowed $165,000 worth of renovation work on his Riverdale apartment to be paid by Interstate Industrial Corp.,a firm that had ties to the Gambino Crime Family.Interstate was seeking a city contract and Kerik arranged a meeting between Frank Di Tommaso, one of it's owners and Raymond V. Casey, head of the city's Trade Waste Commission and a cousin of Mayor Giuliani.
Interstate also hired Mr Kerik's brother,Donald for $85,00 a year as well as Lawrence Ray,who was best man at Mr Kerik's 1998 wedding. An unfortunate falling-out with the groom and the best man led to disclosures to the Daily News that led to the probe.
Mr Kerik also pleaded guilty to failing to report loans totaling $28,000 that he received from real-estate developer,Nathan Berman, which provided the down payment on the apartment where the renovations took place.
Prosecuters did not charge Kerik in other matters that came under investigations including the non bid purchase of 4 security doors costing $50,000,ordered for One Police Plaza that turned out to be the wrong size.
While Kerik was at correction he had an affair with a female officer, using an apartment near Ground Zero, to have sex with her, that was meant as a place to sleep for rescue workers.Mr Schwartzbaum, the Wardens Association president said,".....the department was run like a cross between the Gestapo, the Taliban and the mob"
In November of 2006,authorities subpoenaed HarperCollins, seeking records of payments to Bernard Kerik. They are seeking information on royalty payments for a book of photographs on 9/11 entitled, "In the Line of Duty", using pictures of ground zero taken by police officers. The book which was published in 2001, stated on it's cover that it would donate all revenues-an estimated $500,000 to the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund. There appear to be questions about where Kerik's money went. His royalties which totaled over $75,000 did not go to charity but to a company he established under the name Gryphon Strategic Group.HarperCollins' checks to Kerik were mailed to Giuliani Partners where Kerik was then working.
In 2003 he was sent on a special six-month assignment to train the new Iraqi police force. He quit after three months, citing a need for vacation.
Two years ago,Kerik became director of Taser International, manufacturer of the infamous stun gun.Recently he sold his more than 100,000 shares for $5.7m.
Now Kerik is setting up office in the Caribbean. He has already set up a crime-busting consultancy in Trinidad and is getting started as a presidential security advisor in neighboring Guyana.
This is what the Inter-American Bank is financing, and I question what other projects they are funding, and I am still wondering why they are wondering, "Why are these people so unhappy about our reforms?"Maybe because these are the people who have to pay back that $20m loan financed by The Inter-American Bank Go on, click the link and read what is written at the top of their website, yes, INTEGRITY.

Left Luggage/Baggage Hold at Sugar Hill Harlem Inn

If we are not leaving until the evening, where can we leave our luggage?
We have a large reception room downstairs where you can leave your bags. There are computers and a kitchen if you need to check email,or make a cup of tea, while waiting to be picked up.
There is a cab company just around the corner and they can send a cab within 5 minutes.
This will not happen if it is during rush hour and it is raining. Any combination of this scenario is not conducive to getting a cab.Standing on a street corner in the rain in order to flag one down will only get you wet.
You will not get sick however since sickness comes from viruses and they flourish better inside where it is warm. The best protection from these viruses is go outside and stand in the cold wind or on a corner in the rain. But if you get tired of that and you must come inside where these pesky viruses reside,be sure to eat huge amounts of capsicum in your daily diet.

Harlem Bank Heist on 125th st

"Unjust means irredeemably corrupt all ends no matter how noble"-Arthur Koestler
In the early 19th century,Hong Kong was a tiny fishing village.Three men,all from Scotland, were largely responsible for the transformation of this backwater into one of the largest, and most dynamic cities of the 20th and 21st century.
After the breakup of the monopoly of the British East India Company in 1813.Two of these men Dr William Jardine and Sir James Matheson started a trading company that shipped goods from India to China. The goods that they traded in, were tea, textiles and opium. It was a triangular trading route. The first part of which, was textiles that were shipped from England to India. This first part of the triangle was not so profitable, and was possible, only because of,slavery, the British Empire's hold over India, and taxes that were levied on their cotton and silk industry. The second part of the triangle made up for any lack of profit on the first voyage. This was opium.Opium trade was of vital importance to British Imperialism at this time.It turned a trade deficit with China into a large surplus.
Before the first opium war, most of these shipments were sold to Chinese drug smugglers from depot ships anchored off the coast of Canton. After they were expelled from there, they established themselves on a rugged island, infested with mosquitos and consequently malaria. It's only attribute seemed to be that it had a deep harbour, but with the help of opium this sleepy village became Hong Kong. The third side of this triangle was the tea.Porcelain tea cups, and tea pots were added acting as ballast on the bottom of the ships. This completed the triangle, shipping the cargo of tea back to England.
According to Sir William the opium trade was "the safest and most gentleman like speculation I am aware of". His wealth was sufficient to buy himself a seat in the house of commons in the early 1840's.He went on to become a governor of the Bank of England, chairman of the great P&O shipping line and the second largest landowner in Britain. His partner James Matheson blamed the Chinese dislike for "free trade"and referred to their"marvellous degree of imbecility and avarice, conceit and obstinacy".The Chinese name for Jardine was "iron-headed old rat"
The third Scotsman in this story is about Sir Thomas Sutherland, born in Aberdeen in 1834.At the age of 18 he went to work for the P&O shipping line in China where he was involved in the construction of the Hong Kong docks. He soon realised the need for a trade bank and in March 1865 he opened the Hong Kong Bank.A month later he opened a bank in Shanghai. The bank became the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation better known as HSBC.Most of this business was to service and finance the lucrative opium trade.
Two years later HSBC came under the control of the Hong Kong legislative council,of which Sutherland was a member and was granted special ordnance by the British Government.
Sutherland returned to England where he became chairman of the P&O shipping line.He became a member of parliament and was knighted in 1891.
In 1992 HSBC aquired Midland Bank and on December 31, 1999, HSBC "consummated" its acquisition of Republic New York Corporation,a privately owned bank, including its scandal-ridden securities unit, the subject of litigation for its involvement in the scandal of Martin Armstrong / Princeton Economics. Shortly before the sale of this bank the owner Edmond Safra was murdered at his home in Monaco,a haven for scores of nouveaux riches Russians, including organised crime leaders. The year before he died his bank made a report to the FBI that triggered an investigation into Russian money laundering by American banks.
Although the principality of Monaco has been accused in recent years of turning a blind eye to white-collar crime ,especially money- laundering, the country has almost no violent crime.
HSBC is now the largest corporation in the world in terms of assets $1.7 trillion, bigger even than Citigroup who only have $1.6 trillion. The HSBC flag, the red hexagon is derived from the Scottish Flag which is the angular cross that the patron saint of Scotland,St.Andrew, was crucified upon.
Walking down 125th st I just can't help wondering where all these banks get all this money from. They seem to be the only one's able to afford the rents on those prime corner store locations.Further downtown,on the corner of 103rd and Broadway,I saw a Starbucks had closed down, the rent too expensive for this multi- national. There was some very active reconstruction going on inside.By the end of the month the red angular cross of St Andrew appeared.

Sudden Death Chapter 1

The year was 2034. In early spring an alarming rumour of a strange new illness had begun to spread. Most people ignored the news much like they did with AIDS in the1980's and bird flu at the turn of the century.Soon however it became impossible to ignore, since the rate of incidents was increasing at an astounding rate and more and more deaths were occurring daily.People, who otherwise seemed perfectly healthy would suddenly collapse, writhing on the ground apparently in the most excruciating pain, crying out, thrashing and flailing in the air from the intense pain.
In a much reported instance, a dying woman had managed to grab a policeman's gun and shot herself in front of a large group of people who had gathered at 125th and Broadway to lend assistance to this agonized woman. The surprising outcome of this one particular incident was that most people expressed a sense of relief when the gun went off and the screaming stopped. Before long it became clear that people who were witness to these occurrences of SD (sudden death) were themselves so traumatized that they had to seek help and suffered a kind of shell shock. There were 2 reasons for this. One was from witnessing the obvious pain that the victim suffered, and the terrible screams that seemed to emanate from their very pores. The other cause of the trauma was that nobody knew from where this illness came, and it seemed more and more obvious there was a chance that it could happen to themselves.
A deep sense of panic set into the population and more and more people fled in terror when someone fell ill in a public space. Since it took the victim about 5 hours to die from this seizure and nobody had ever recovered,a public debate began as to whether it would be more humane to just shoot the victim and put him out of his misery.More and more people carried their own weapons, hoping to be able to end their misery, but for some reason were unable to withdraw the loaded gun and pull the trigger.By September thousands of people were dying in this horrendous manner and society was starting to unravel.
Early in the year a young scientist, Dr Billy Strayhorn had started to do research on this illness and had noticed that for practically the first time in history, this affliction did not effect those from poorer countries or extremely poor neighborhoods in the west.In fact it seemed that the wealthier you were the more likely you were to get ill. Also few people below the age of 40 suffered from this affliction.
From the early on in his research Dr. Billy was suspicious of the EAR. Almost a 1/4 century since the cell phone craze had died, the E.A.R. was invented. This was a tiny chip that was inserted under the skin behind the ear.No more carrying around that phone, now all you had to do was say the persons name and you were immediately connected. It was quite reminiscent of New York in the 1970's when all these deranged citizens walked around the streets talking to themselves. It was not an unusual sight to see people standing on a street corner having a heated argument with an old, now disused parking meter.
He was however puzzled by the lack of illness in adolescence since most kids from age 9 had one of these devises implanted. Finally at the end of September his report was released. The news was not good. All those people who had one of these EAR devises implanted for more than 3 years were going to get this illness. These devises were initiating a devastating mold that somehow was able to remain hidden in the brain until about a week before the victim collapsed. The incubation period was a bit more than 20 years. Most children under 12 were safe. Many were borderline.A long wait ensued for those young children.

Hippocratic Hypocrisy

There is a large doctor's office on East 65th st.Anytime you go, there are crowds of people. The 2 main doctor's there Yaffe and Ruden are rarely seen. They are men,but most of the other doctor's are women.I hardly ever go to a doctor but I got lime disease twice last summer so I needed to take antibiotics.I never went for a follow up the last time I was treated.I hate doctor's.Then this December I felt what seemed to be an infected mole on my back, but I couldn't see it.I waited for it to go away on it's own.But it stuck around like an unwelcome in law.
Towards the end of January I was on the beach with my son and as we walked along the shore line,I asked my son to look at my back. The way he described it made me think of lime disease.I thought, maybe the last treatment had not worked, so now I was really worried. The thought of the rest of my life in pain was not a happy one and over the week-end I totally convinced myself that it was lime disease.
Monday morning when I got back,I called the doctor and made an appointment and arrived about 1 hour late, which turned out to be exactly on time. The doctor took one look and discounted my diagnosis by reassuring me that it was not lime but an infected mole and I probably had cancer.
Wow! What a relief that was.I was not going to spend the next 30-40 years of my life in pain,it would be over and done with, in a matter of months. They gave me antibiotics for the infected mole and on a return visit the next week, after twisting my arm, gave me a complete check-up and removed the mole for a biopsy making sure to mention the "cancer word" about 3 times.I ignored the doctor's remarks.I was told that I would hear from them within a week or so and I left making sure not to make an appointment for "that very important colonoscopy".If I already got cancer ,what would be the point?
About a week later the doctor. calls about the check up business and tries to tell me that my liver results look a little suspect, but that could be to do with the antibiotics that I am on, and I should make another appointment to do another check up.
Two weeks have passed and I am still waiting to hear whether I have cancer or not.

How much is a subway ride? The long answer.

Should the subway be free? Most people would laugh at the concept.Primarily, because of some preconceived ideas of economics."How would we run a subway system if it was free?"
In the same way we could ask "How could we afford abolishing the inheritance tax?"The cost of that little gem would be about $50 billion...per year. This would go towards making the rich even richer, so the money would not really circulate through the average Joe's pocket, but it would trickle down.By the way the antonym to trickle is flow, and if we want to drink, the water should flow.
I am not an expert on economics, but I am nevertheless going to try some rough calculations.
There were at the last census in 2000 approximately 8m people in NYC and the population has been on a steady increase since the 70's when it was around 7m.I would therefore guess that by now the population is around 9m, one third of which use the subway or the bus twice daily at $2 each trip. That means that the MTA take in about $12m per day.For those of you who have not done these fairly simple calculations you may want to ask."What the hell do they do with all that money?"This is a fair question but since I am not an economist I really don't have the answer.I do know the the MTA has 2 sets of books .This came out in a report from the State Controllers office of Alan Hevesi in April of 2003 and most of you know what happened to him.It was stated in the report that more than 1/2 a billion dollars were shifted into a secret account in order to create a deficit,so an increase could be implemented. So the fares were increased in 2003 despite the fact that there was a surplus of $537 million.Remember the subway strike that took place last Christmas, over wages and pensions that the mayor deemed"selfish and illegal?" I don't know if I should laugh or cry at this point. But let's move back to the task at hand which is economics. Our guestimated gross daily income for the subway is $12m per day and the yearly income would then be $4b give or take a million or two.To most of us that would seem like a lot of money but not perhaps to Paul Bremmer who recently dismissed culpability in his oversight of some $12b .360 tons of cash shipped from the US on pallets in military cargo planes, that just fell through the cracks in Iraq,no big deal.
We live in a universe of abundance or so some people believe. Most of those that affirm this, however, are generally pretty well heeled. I don't believe in anything, which of course is impossible since nothing is still something. Krishnamurti said " A cup is useful only when is is empty;and a mind that is full of beliefs is really an uncreative mind"Excuse me I digress.Let us just believe in a universe of abundance long enough to make the subway free. Then we will see an immediate infusion of $12m per day injected into the economy,we will see the smiles on the faces of all those who enter into the otherwise hated underground. Our progressive creed will spread all over the world."NYC has a free subway system,we can do it too." Sounds like good economics to me.
And then........the environmental impact.Wow this will jump start America from a world of gas guzzling cars, all going their separate ways, to a community of people all moving together to seriously take on the problems of global warming.Imagine a system of trains and street cars networking throughout America on roads built for cars.Let GM and big oil pay to put back those tracks that they tore up in the early part of the last century. If we can learn to move together,we can learn to work together and together we can knock down the walls that separate us.

Crackheads are people too

Back in the 80's when I was a street vendor, the "crack epidermic" began.Starting in South Central, Los Angeles it sped across, the length of the country like run away freight train.Astonished New Yorkers looked at each other in bewilderment, unable to understand how this scourge could envelop the country with the veracity of a smallpox epidemic.Invading already depressed neighborhoods it turned the streets of New York into a war zone.Few people understood why or how such an insidious disease could just spring out of nowhere. One,Gary Webb, tried to explain but paid the ultimate price.
We street vendors lost tons of merchandise from out of control petty thieves who would steal the shirt off your back.We were in a constant state of loading and unloading, setting up, and breaking down, everyday sometimes as much as 10 times a day.It was during these times when you were most vulnerable.Inventory control was an impossible goal,so we never knew how much we lost,we just knew that we did.
Paradoxically there was one market that was quite safe.It was basically kept secure from crackheads, by, of course, other crackheads. We all felt reasonably secure that they would not steal from us since they could not afford to be caught, as it would lead to banishment from the market and their only source of income. They were there in the market from early morning till the last vendor left at night, to help load and unload,to set up tarps in the driving rain,or brake ice in the freezing cold. The market would not have been the same without them, fetching us endless cups of tea and coffee in the winter and cool drinks in the summer and defending the market from outside marauders who came in droves,to steel our hard earned merchandise. At night we left them and they found their way into the underground, that they entered via a tunnel in the center mall on Houston Street, where they kept warm and slept. They became known as The Mole People.
In a strange twist, a female ex-vendor who had married the son of a wealthy Japanese industrialist and had 2 children and a store on West Broadway, left her comfortable loft in SoHo to join her lover,Paradise and the Mole People.Crack of course played an important part in this sad tale. She remained in this state for some years until she was able, with help of her sister, to gather herself together and emerge from this dungeon.I bumped into her recently at the Harlem Fairway with a child that looked like Paradise and was surely a product of her days with the Mole People.
